Description The President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, fondly known as Madiba, celebrates his 78th birthday with more than 2,000 children who are living with disability in disadvantaged communities across the county. The day-long birthday extravaganza is being held on the 17th July 1996 on the grounds of Hilton College near Pietermaritzburg in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Madiba was delighted to be able to share his 100kg birthday cake, ablaze with 78 candles, with the children and their carers, the circus performers and other assembled guests. The event has the backing of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund.
