Description A young boy in a wheelchair is among the more than 2,000 children who are living with disability in disadvantaged communities across the country who have been invited to Nelson Mandela’s 78th birthday celebration. The day-long birthday extravaganza is being held on the 17th July 1996 on the grounds of Hilton College near Pietermaritzburg in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. In advance of today's festivities, the invited children have been examined and treated by a team of orthopaedic specialists and physiotherapists. Many of them have been given life-changing wheelchairs. The event has the backing of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund. Nelson Mandela was born on the 18th July 1918 in Mvezo, a small village in the Eastern Cape.
