|Caption:||The educationalist, Patrick van Rensburg, was a leading proponent of education with production. He envisaged a system of 'brigades' at SOMAFCO; these units would work towards economic self-sufficiency in rural areas by working with, and developing the skills of the local communities. One such unit was the 'Kathrada Brigade', named after Ahmed Kathrada, a former South African politician, political prisoner, and anti-apartheid activist.|
